Conch Piercing: 5 Signs Your Piercing Is Healing Well

The conch piercing is winning more and more people over with its bold style and versatility. But once it's done, one question often comes up: how do you know it's healing well? Healing is a key step in enjoying your jewellery to the fullest, and certain signs don't lie. In this article, discover how to spot the signs of good healing and avoid unpleasant surprises.

What Is a Conch Piercing and Where Is It Located?

Where the Conch Piercing Sits

The conch piercing sits on the central part of the ear cartilage, in the hollow area near the ear canal. There are two variants:

  • Inner conch, placed in the main hollow of the ear.
  • Outer conch, closer to the outer rim of the cartilage.

Easy to personalise, it can be worn with either a hoop or ASTM F-136 titanium labret-style jewellery, ideal for supporting optimal healing. Note that your first-fitting jewellery will be labret-style.

5 Signs Your Conch Piercing Is Healing Well

1. Conch Pain That's Gradually Easing

It's normal to feel some discomfort or tenderness in the first few days. That said, the pain from your conch piercing should gradually ease. If, after a few weeks, you're only feeling slight tenderness to the touch, that's a good sign! (Note: it's best to only touch your piercing when cleaning it)

2. Little to No Swelling

Some mild swelling is common at first. This should ease over the following weeks. An ear that's gradually returning to its natural look is a sign of good progress.

3. No Unusual Discharge

A conch piercing that's healing well can show a small amount of clear or pale yellow discharge (lymph), which is normal. On the other hand, thick, greenish discharge, or discharge with an unpleasant smell, should raise a red flag and needs prompt medical attention.

4. No Persistent Redness

Right after the piercing, the ear may be slightly red. This should ease off fairly quickly. Skin that's gradually returning to its usual colour shows your conch piercing is healing well.

5. Reduced Movement

but no sharp pain. During healing, the jewellery should stay stable. If you can gently handle the area while cleaning (without forcing it) without intense pain or excessive discomfort, that's a very good sign.

How Long Does a Conch Piercing Take to Heal?

The first few weeks of conch piercing healing. The first few weeks are crucial. During this time, it's normal to feel some discomfort, see mild swelling, and need to clean your piercing regularly with a suitable saline solution.

Between 1 and 3 Months

Pain and swelling gradually ease. That said, it's still essential to limit handling and avoid sleeping on the pierced ear, so as not to delay healing.

3 to 6 Months and Beyond

The full process can take around 6 to 9 months or more, depending on the person. Patience is essential. It's only after this period that you can think about swapping your first-fitting jewellery for a permanent piece, like an ASTM F-136 titanium hoop.

Tips to Support Healing for Your Conch Piercing

To give yourself the best chance of optimal healing for your conch piercing, here are a few practical tips:

  • Clean your piercing regularly with a sterile saline solution, without using harsh products like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. You can clean it using a sterile compress.
  • Avoid sleeping on the pierced ear, especially during the first few months, to limit pressure and irritation.
  • Don't touch your piercing with dirty hands, and avoid unnecessary handling. Choose quality jewellery, like ASTM F-136 titanium, to help reduce the risk of allergy and support healthy healing. Titanium is a hypoallergenic, durable, corrosion-resistant material.
  • Be patient: every body reacts differently, and healing can take several months.

Keeping an eye on your conch piercing is essential to help prevent complications and enjoy your jewellery to the fullest. Normal healing shows itself through subtle but encouraging signs: less pain, minimal swelling, no signs of infection... If you have any doubts at all, never hesitate to see your piercer.
