Everything About Lobe Piercings: Guide and Aftercare

Lobe piercings are timeless and elegant, and open the door to a huge variety of jewelry, letting you build a truly unique ear curation. Learn why choosing the right material is essential for a safe, beautiful experience.

The Different Lobe Piercing Styles

Lobe piercings come in many forms, giving you countless options for building a unique ear curation. Whether you love a classic or a bold style, lobe piercings have you covered.

  • The classic lobe: the best-known option, the classic lobe piercing works with a huge variety of jewelry: labret pieces, hoops, earrings, drops… Depending on the shape of your ear, you can get anywhere from one to four classic lobe piercings.
  • The transverse lobe piercing: as the name suggests, this piercing runs horizontally through the lobe. It's a less common, bolder take on lobe piercing.

At Obsidian Piercing, we offer a range of piercing jewelry for your lobes, from labret pieces and hoops to earrings.

Choosing Your First Lobe Jewelry

If you're planning a lobe piercing, choosing the right jewelry is an important step. The wrong choice can slow down healing, or even cause irritation or inflammation.

Why Material Matters for Your First Piece of Jewelry

Choosing the right material for your first piece of jewelry is an important step. We recommend ASTM F-136 titanium: it's biocompatible, lightweight, and resistant to both corrosion and everyday wear. With ASTM F-136 titanium jewelry, you won't experience inflammation or irritation, since this material contains no nickel. Titanium can be used as your first piece of jewelry, and continues to work beautifully after healing.

Switching to 316L Surgical Steel After Healing

Once healing is complete, you can explore other materials for your lobe jewelry, like our earrings. 316L surgical steel, known for its strength and shine, becomes an interesting option at this stage. It's also biocompatible and suits a wide range of skin types, letting you vary your style while keeping your piercing healthy.

Starting your ear curation with a lobe piercing is a great first step into the world of piercing, a choice that lets you express your style and personality.

The Lobe Piercing Procedure and Aftercare

Getting a Lobe Piercing: The Procedure

Whether it's a lobe piercing or any other, it's important to:

  • Do your research on your piercer: check that they follow proper hygiene standards and correct piercing technique, and look into their reviews. Don't hesitate to check their social media to see examples of their work.
  • Preparation: the ear and surrounding area are cleaned and disinfected to reduce the risk of infection. Your piercer will then mark the exact spot on the lobe, to make sure of the placement and get your approval before going ahead.
  • The piercing itself: using sterile equipment, your piercer performs the piercing with a proper needle (never a piercing gun) and inserts your first piece of jewelry.
  • Aftercare instructions: before you leave, you'll receive detailed instructions on how to care for your piercing at home.

Our Aftercare Tips

For a fresh piercing, we recommend cleaning it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. To do this, you should:

  • Wash your hands (under your nails, between your fingers…). Use saline solution to clean your piercing, and choose a gauze pad rather than cotton wool for a gentle, trouble-free clean.
  • Make sure your piercing is thoroughly dry after cleaning.
  • Don't sleep on your brand-new piercing.
  • Don't pick off any crusting. Removing it too early will slow down healing.
  • Don't fidget with your piercing. It's tempting to touch it, but your hands aren't always clean and can carry bacteria.
  • Avoid swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms while healing.
  • Watch for signs of irritation, inflammation or infection. If you notice redness, swelling, discharge or pain, don't hesitate to consult your piercer.
